How to Keep Whites Bright and Colors Vibrant

Fabric Care Tips

July 02, 2025

With the summer season, the sun will be shining its brightest, and you will want your clothes to be just as bright. However, whether it be bright whites or vibrant colors, it can be hard to maintain the brightness we love in our fabrics without knowing a few helpful tricks.

Use Lemon Juice

Adding just a cup of lemon juice alongside your typical washing machine detergent can help to brighten white fabrics. However, avoid using this method for your more colorful clothing items, as lemon juice can bleach them.

Use Borax

Adding just a half-cup of Borax to your washing machine with each load can help to keep whites fresh and clean. Not only that, but tougher stains can be fought just by adding Borax as well. However, this method will require an extra rinse cycle just to ensure that any extra Borax particles are cleaned out of the machine.

Wash White Clothes in Smaller Loads

Washing too many clothes when washing white fabrics prevents them from getting properly washed. This is because the washing machine does not have enough room to carry water to all the clothes that need cleaning when the machine is too crowded. To keep these white fabrics as clean and bright as possible, wash fewer clothes at once in your machine.

Change Your Dryer Settings

Machine dryers actually contribute more to the fading of your fabrics than washing machines. This is due to the high levels of heat involved in the drying process. Thus, keeping your dryer on the lowest possible heat setting is much better if you want to keep your fabric colors fresh and vibrant.

When in Doubt, Leave It to the Pros

Aside from all of these methods, a great way to keep your clothes vibrant and colorful is to take them to your local Lapels Cleaners. Our professional dry cleaners can help keep your clothes clean and fresh without sacrificing the brightness and color you love.
